Bollywood Stoicism

Finding Stoic Wisdom in Bollywood Lyrics

Stoicism is an ancient philosophy, and one of its core teachings is that there is a difference between the things that we can control, and the things that we cannot control.

I believe that wisdom that rings true can be found in all places, so here, we look for the stoic wisdom present in the lyrics of various bollywood songs.

Ghatni hi thi yeh bhi ghatna, ghatthe ghatthe lo ye ghat gayi

This occurence always had to occur, and as other occurrences occurred, this too occurred.

Song: Chor Bazaari

Film: Love Aaj Kal

Darna kya, bhala bura, hone do ab jo bhi ho

What is the need to fear the good or the bad. Whatever is meant to happen, let it happen.

Song: Pehli Baar

Film: Dil Dhadakne Do

Jaane kya hoga, kya hoga kya pata. Iss pal ko milke aa jeele zara

What is to happen? We can only wonder. Let us meet this moment, and live a little.

Song: Pehli Nazar Mein

Film: Race

Jo ho raha hai, pehli dafa hai, wallah, aisa hua

That which is happening, it's the first time, and lo, it has happened

Song: Subhanallah

Film: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Chale raste, jaha le chale

These roads will only take us, wherever they will take us.

Song: Abhi Kuch Dino Se

Film: Dil Toh Baccha Jai Ji

Kar lo jo bhi karna hai, hota hai jo hona hai

Do whatever you must. What must happen will happen.

Song: Laaree Chootee
